This issue only affects installations using D-Bus activation and could potentially result in a Denial of Service. No user data is at risk and this issue only affects installations that use D-Bus activation. We recommend updating the disk benchmarking tool to the latest version (3.1.0 or later) as soon as possible. We have released a fixed version 3.1.1.

The disk benchmarking tool is now delivered as a pre-compiled binary package. If you are not able to update to the latest version because of a dependency problem, we recommend installing the disk benchmarking tool from the binary repository instead.

What is disk benchmarking?

Disk benchmarking is a tool that uses the Linux Kernel's ext4 filesystem to simulate a large hard drive with a maximum of 1 terabyte (1,000 gigabytes) in size. During the benchmarking process, the tool copies files from a source directory to the simulated hard drive in order to benchmark file transfer speeds.

It is not uncommon for software-based disk benchmarking tools to cause problems when used on some systems due to their high-level of disk activity. If you experience any issues with disk benchmarking on your system, such as data loss or kernel panics, please contact support@komodia.com

What is D-Bus activation?

D-Bus activation is a technology for starting software on Linux desktops using D-Bus instead of through the traditional (and more resource intensive) X11 graphical display.

What is Disk Benchmarking?

Disk benchmarking is a tool that helps determine how fast your disk performance is. From the Linux kernel, it supports different measurement and analysis options.

What is disk benchmarking?

Disk benchmarking is a disk performance benchmark made by the developers of the disk benchmarking tool. Disk benchmarking can be used to test drives, including HDDs and SSDs.

Mitaka and Afternoon D-Bus Activation Issues

The disk benchmarking tool has been updated to the latest version (3.1.2) and patches have been applied in Mitaka. While the issue was originally found during our testing in Mitaka, we are now releasing a fixed version 3.1.1 for users that require it or for installations that use D-Bus activation.
